Easter At Sea

DSC_0581_thumb.jpg

Today was our second sea day and Easter.  The day started like any other day, as people wake up we drag ourselves out to the Haven for breakfast.  Here’s a lovely photo of most of us not long after getting up!

DSC_0580DSC_0581

We attended a Jazz Brunch in Le Bistro where they had a live band playing New Orleans jazz while we enjoyed a delicious smorgasbord…I say smorgasbord because it was an odd paring of food even for brunch – there’s nothing like waffles & eggs with a side of penne pasta!

After brunch we played what seemed like hours of cards before heading to an extremely overpriced game of BINGO where we were all big losers.  The highlight of my day was putting in $10 into a slot machine and with a .30c pull won $48!!  I can definitely see how gambling is addicting, it was hard to cash out and not just “try one more time!”.

Apparently the distance between Cagliari (where we were yesterday) and Palermo (where we go tomorrow) isn’t very far, so we spent a good portion of the day just bobbing along.  They turned off the motors and we just sat for hours so we didn’t get to far ahead!  Tomorrow morning we dock in Palermo, Italy and then onto Naples on Tuesday to see Pompeii!

Good night!

Barcelona, Spain

DSC_03955_thumb.jpg

This morning we woke up to rain and quickly learned that “it never rains in Barcelona” or better yet, “I’ve never seen it rain in Barcelona”.  Great!  Anyway, today we ventured into Barcelona via bus for a scenic city tour.  The first part of our tour was on the bus and it rained, so it was hard to get good pictures however, when we started our walking tour the sun came out and it was beautiful!

The “highlight” was visiting the Holy Family Basilica that has been being built for nearly 100 years with the possibility of being done in 2026.  One word sums it up, UGLY.  If you want to visit Fred Flintstone’s castle than you’d love this place.  The original designer’s name was Gaudi and I’m pretty sure that’s where the word “gaudy” came from.  I wasn’t overly impressed!

We also went by the Olympic Stadium and saw where the flame was for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games.

After visiting the Basilica we headed down to the Gothic region and saw buildings and cathedrals built in the first century.  These buildings were amazingly beautiful and not to mention OLD!  It was pretty cool to see, touch and walk on such an old piece of history!!

They also had a large BARCELONA sign in the middle of the square where Brandi, Alex and I stood by our letter!

Tonight we played Deal or No Deal in the Stardust Theater, while none of us made it up on stage, Brandi matched enough briefcases to win $50 and have her name appear up on the big screen!  She was bright red, when she was spotlighted Smile

Tomorrow we’re off to Valencia, Spain!

Until then!

Vatican City & Embarkation

DSC_0087.jpg

Today was a total whirlwind, that started about 6am.  I figured I’d be super jetlagged since we’re eight hours ahead here, but since I didn’t sleep the previous 24-ish hours, I was able to fall asleep around 8:30pm and slept HARD until about 6am which was good because we had to have eaten breakfast, be packed and in the hotel lobby by 8:30am when we were picked up for a tour of Vatican City.

On the way to The Vatican we drove past the Colosseum.  I wish we had had time to visit it, but it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to, so for now I’ll just be happy with the photos!  (The cruise ship port is a tour hour drive from Rome, so when we come back in a 10 days it’s a little to far to visit and then when we return at the end of our cruise it’s straight to the airport.)

Vatican City {The Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica}

WOW, what a beautiful place!  We were lucky enough to have hired a private tour guide who got us right in and took us on an amazing tour of The Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica.  It was amazing to be walking through (and on!) history.  Every single corridor, piazza and room was beautifully adorned with one of a kind, breathtaking paintings, tapestries, sculptures and mosaics.  It didn’t seem possible for the next location we toured to be even more beautiful.  I’m still pinching myself in amazement that I had the privilege of touring such a historical place.

Embarkation {Civitavecchia, Italy}

After our tour, we got back on our bus and headed out to the coast where the Norwegian Jade was waiting.  The crazy part is for some reason I didn’t take many photos of our embarkation, in fact the photos I took are down right awful.  I was way to present in the moment to even think about snapping a photo!  Nonetheless, here are a couple of photos of us boarding the vessel.

Tomorrow we’ll be in Livorno, Italy where we’ll take a trolley ride to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa….O.M.G!!  The only downside is we lose another hour and there will be a nine hour difference between us and Seattle.

Okay, off to bed I go.  I’m loving the gentle rocking of the boat and it’s putting me to sleep!

#CatchTheMoment365; Week 33

day228; aug16ab

Week 33, I made it! AND I think if I get it posted tonight it’s still within the “official” week for #CatchTheMoment365!  Yay me!

This week included the funeral of my Grandma.  It was a sad time of mourning, but also a fun and exciting time to reconnect with family I don’t see very often.  Flying out on Wednesday I never would have expected that this turned into a great trip with lots of wonderful memories.

One of the most memorable parts of the trip is when we headed back to the family farm to celebrate my Grandma’s amazing life!  I have blogged about the farm in the past and how it’s been in my mom’s family for nearly 100 years, but if you missed it you can read and see pictures of the inside of the farm HERE and the outside of the farm HERE!

The end of this post includes a massive mailing I assisted with at work.  Our new Communications Specialist, Stephanie, redesigned the quarterly Eastside Baby Corner print newsletter and it turned out fantastic!  Not only is it gorgeous, but it brings a new level of professionalism to EBC.  Everyone I have talked to is absolutely blown away by the new look!  If you are interested in learning more about Eastside Baby Corner and want to check-out Eastside Baby Corner’s 2014 Summer newsletter click HERE!

This week was a great one!

Meet my mom, the arsonist

20140510-231845.jpg

Today is Mothers Day and what better way to celebrate my mom then throwing her under the bus and sharing this group text between her, me and my sisters from earlier this week …

mothers day text

All I have to day is I love my mommy and her sense of humor, not to mention how my poor dad is always the butt of my sisters and my jokes!

We celebrated Mothers Day early by going to the Mariners game last night (which we won!!) and are having brunch today!

Like I already said I love my mom, she is the best mom ever!

Hoppy Easter

DSC_0105_thumb.jpg

DSC_0105

This Easter was a crazy one for my family.  My Grandma put her house on the market and in 12 hours she had 3 offers and a bidding war…suddenly we had just a couple of days to put on a massive garage sale – which just had to fall on Easter weekend.  In addition of the garage sale, Alex was home for Spring break but was flying back to Idaho on Sunday morning.  So we made the decision to hold a garage sale and Easter on Saturday.  It was a busy day.

We had our family over for Easter dinner on Saturday night and then dying Easter eggs.  Everyone spent the night and Sunday morning we woke up to see if the Easter Bunny had visited, had a big breakfast and then send Alex off to the airport.  Needless to say it was a world wind weekend.  Lots of fun, great memories, laughs and a whole lot of photos were taken!

I have been horrible about getting non-steps to a million or #catchthemoment365 posts up and have made it a goal to post a non-related post once a week.  I have a bunch of photos that I’m in the process of editing that I want to get up on my blog, but life just gets in the way….not to mention exhaustion!  With that being said, here’s that first post Smile

And then no Benson holiday would be complete with out a throw-down.  This time it was Kelly –vs.- Maddie in a jump roping contest.

jumprope contest2

The game might have been slightly rigged, but in the end Maddie was the big winner and Kelly the loser.  We’ll just say Kelly was a bit skeptical by the results Smile

Alex and Mason with their final vote for the winner….

My dad and Aunt Sue were in charge of the voting…at this point Kelly was up 2-1 votes, but Maddie was about to make her big comeback.

DSC_0149

Our official jump-rope official, Emmalee, congratulating the winner.  Notice Kelly in the back with the smirk on her face, she was a good sport and new she had no chance to beat Maddie!

Hope you all had a Hoppy Easter!
