Run

All I want to do is run. Run fast and not look back.

I am okay being the coward who runs away from fear.

I am okay not facing it and pretending everything is okay.  Really I am.

However, I don’t have that option and can’t run.

I’ve been home from Arizona for 24-hours+ and have known about the cancer now for five days.  It still doesn’t feel any easier.

Kelly is out partying with her friends and I cannot stop crying.

Alex is completely okay with it (or so she acts) which makes me feel even more silly for being an emotional wreck.

My mom has (for the most part) stopped crying, at least in front of us.  However, I saw my dad cry for the first time in my life yesterday and that broke my heart.

We’re all hurting.  We’re all lost.  We’re all confused.

We jokingly talk about death, reminding Kelly what we want in her will, etc. It takes the edge off a bit…for the moment we feel normal.  Humor is getting us through this.

The love and support that has been outreached to Kelly and my family is mind boggling.  Everyone is being so nice, kind and giving.

The phone is ringing off the hook (as it rings now) and I just have to let it ring, I’m not ready to tell the story all over again. I’m not ready to cry again.

It amazes me with all the love and support we’re receiving how I can still feel so depressed and alone.  Ask anyone, I am anything but a depressed person.  I’m normally outgoing, loud and obnoxious are normal choice adjectives people associate with me.  Lately I don’t want to talk to anyone, I want to just lay in bed.  That feels good.

*Sigh* the phone just rang again.  Thankfully Alex answered it.

Meeting up with my mom and Alex for lunch at our favorite restaurant, then out for some retail therapy after.

I plan on running away again today.  Maybe tomorrow I’ll be more ready to face reality.

Merry Christmas!

So what if it’s January 2nd, it’s always Christmas for me!   Plus, I’m way behind in my blogging!  Still need to blog Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.…I may or may not get those up since it’s now 2012!!

*Beware* there are LOTSA photos below!!

christmas morning

Last year Kelly informed our family of her wish to have the entire family wear matching pajamas and take a family photo.  Last year was our first year …. this year we did much better in the camera timing!

Alex decided she wanted our family to add another new family tradition.  This one was a little bit wonky…perfect for my family!  Alex came up with the ugliest ornament contest.  Let me tell you, there were some U.G.L.Y ornaments.  Some were handmade while others were store bought.  Others were true ornaments and some were made into ornaments.  We’ll just say, my family knows ugly…see for yourself!

….and that completes the Benson Family’s 2011 Christmas!

Hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season!

…and like that she’s gone … out with a BANG!

Alex left this morning for college.  It should have been a seamless transition from home life to college life.  However, in typical Benson Family fashion it wasn’t so seamless.  Actually, seamless is far from the truth!

The Plan: My mom, dad and Alex were to fly down to Salt Lake City, stay with my Grandmother for a few days and then drive north to Rexburg, Idaho to get her settled into her dorm and new college life.  This morning, their flight was to leave at 6am.  At least that was the plan.  Didn’t go as planned.

What Happened: The plan was to leave for the airport about 4am.  I was the lucky one who got to drive them to the airport.  (Darn mom, who remembered that I had her drive me to the airport a few weeks earlier….wish she had forgot!)  However, it was like 4:15-4:20am by the time we hit the road.  My dad jokingly asked Alex “You have your wallet, right?” In typical early morning Alex manner, she mumbled “No.” Yet, the way it came across, my parents thought she was joking and we drove a bit farther – until I stepped in and straight up asked her if she had her drivers license.

Brakes slammed.  Car U-Turned. Back home we went.

No big deal, Alex told us that her purse was sitting on the kitchen table.  She jumped out of the car and inside.  When she came scurrying out into the garage and into her car, it became apparent that she had no idea where her purse was.  (It’s now pushing 4:30am)

My parents are clearly frustrated and panicked, so we all jump out of the car and turn the house upside down looking for her purse.  Nothing.  So where was her purse?  She had several options…

  1. Grandma’s House - We had gone to my Grandma’s so Alex could say bye.
  2. The house we’re dog sitting at - She may have brought it in with her when she ran into feed the dog.
  3. Ixtapa - Our family favorite restaurant, where we had all gone out to dinner at last night.
  4. Mary’s Car – Alex went with Mary to see the Broadway production of Roger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella last night.  It could have been left in her car
  5. 5th Avenue Theater, downtown Seattle

Purse Search #1: We started with calling Grandma at 4:30am, a time that nobody wants to receive a phone call at.  Verdict: Grandma didn’t have Alex’s purse

Purse Search #2: Then we called Mary.  Verdict: Mary is sound asleep, isn’t answering her phone

Plan B: My dad recently put all of our birth certificates and current passports back into the Safety Deposit Box, which was clearly not an option to grab at 4:30 in the morning.  However, he had her expired passport and her social security card, that they were going to to try to use to get her through security.  Right as we’re walking out the door, she grabs her High School ID card as another piece of identification.

We jump back into the car and now it’s pushing 5:00am … flight leaves at 6am.

We stop by the house where we’re dog sitting at for her to run in and check to see if her purse was left there.

Purse Search #3: Dog-Sitting House.  Verdict: No purse

Now it’s time to actually head to the airport.

My mom calls the airport to see what the chances were of Alex being able to get through security with an expired passport, her social security card and high school ID card.  The airport pretty much tells her, she has a 50-50 chance of getting through.  They will not know until she goes through the security check point.

It’s at that point that I point out to make Alex seem even more terrorist-y she will be going through security with a 1-way ticket (since they were dropping her off at college) and no real identification.  At that point my dad is convinced Alex isn’t going anywhere until her purse is found.  But we continue on to the airport.  The new plan is they go to the airport and I get to circle the airport until they get through security, so I can pick-up Alex if she isn’t able to get through.

The tension in the car was extreme.  Alex decides to break some of it up with her “joke,” which made us all laugh and release some pent-up anxiety!

Alex: “I don’t understand why they would think I would be a terroist.  I’m flying with both my parents (granted, I guess they could be my hostages! haha!), two large suitcases filled with all my belongings, and no real ID.  Don’t you think if I was a real terrorist I would have valid ID?  Why would I want to flag myself, going through security?  Clearly a terrorist would be the perfect person to go through security!”

That’s probably very true!

We made great time to the airport, but as we approach the departure area traffic backs up.  It’s at that time we realize, there’s no way they were going to make there flight.  I dropped them off and began my constant circling of the airport, while they pray they can still make the flight.

Five minutes after I drop them off, I was beginning my return back through the departure lanes, when Alex calls me.  Apparently they left her expired passport and social security card in the car. Seriously?  After all that?  They tell me, there was no need to hurry, they had already missed their flight.

I make my way back to my mom, give her the passport and social security card and once again circle the airport – waiting for the call that either I needed to pick-up Alex or was free to head home.

About ten minutes later the call came and amazingly I was free to head home.  Alex breezed right through security and they were booked on a flight that left in an hour.

Upon getting home, I stopped to feed the dog….remember our Purse Search #3 location??  I walk right in and there’s her purse sitting on the counter.  Alex must have been so flustered when she ran into the house that she just didn’t see it.

After I went home and slept a few hours, I made a trip to the Post Office and shipped her purse to her.

End of Story

Sigh

She’s only been gone 14 hours and I am already sad missing her.  Hope the next 12 weeks go by fast, because I can tell it could be a long wait!

My Dad’s Thoughts on My Big Mouth

Wednesday night, I graciously invited myself over to my parents house for dinner and insisted on having one of my favorite meals.  I thought it would be nice and spend some time with them.  I figured my parents missed their favorite daughter!  Even if they were out of my favorite salad dressing, but I’m not complaining ;)

I’m a giver, what can I say?

Since it had been a whole 24 hours since I’d seen them and just hours since I had bugged them about dinner, I figured I owed them a nice dinner conversation.  So what did I do?  I jumped right in and talked about my favorite topic … myself of course!

(Remember, it’s no secret I’m vain!)

I was maybe two breaths in and about 5,000 words later (I talk fast!), my loving father asks me in all honesty….

Dad: How have you been feeling lately?

Cori: I’ve been feeling great, thanks. (Now ready to move back to talking about my test I took yesterday…)

Dad: Are you still taking your medication?? (I take Prozac for anxiety issues)

Cori: Yes! Anyway…

Dad: Are you sure? Because it doesn’t seem to be working?

Gee Dad, Thanks!

Lucky for him, my sister Alex jumps in and goes … or maybe not?

Alex: Yeah, you are awfully hyper and happy tonight!

It’s a good thing that I know my dad’s evil sense of humor and that he was only trying to achieve one thing … to make everyone laugh and lucky for him we all burst out laughing!  He said it so dead serious, that it came off guard.

It’s so nice to know that I’m so loved!

Oh and I Love My Daddy, even if he does make fun of me!!

How a Neti Pot Made Me Cry… {Happy Birthday To ME!}

Sunday afternoon we had a joint birthday for my dad & myself, even though today is my official 26th birthday!  It was a small family party and never in my wildest dreams did I think a simple silly present from my little sister would make me cry!

The present opening started out normal enough, I got money, candy and a pair of capris from Lucy.  Awesome gifts, but nothing exciting (or tear worthy).  Until I got to Alex’s gift … I open her card and bag …

DSC_0361

to find a Neti Pot …

DSC_0369

As you can see, I wasn’t overly bummed by the Neti Pot.  It has become a bit of a family joke after I realized that many members of my family had never heard of one.  I went as far as finding You-Tube videos for them to watch about it, because they didn’t believe something like this existed!  [FYI Wiki’s definition of a Neti Pot: “Are used to flush out the nasal cavities by using gravity to draw the flow of saline”.

My whole family was laughing when I opened the present because of how much giggles it had given us over the last year or so!  Little did I know this was a “filler” gift, because the real gift she got me couldn’t fit in the cute little birthday bag.

See that note taped to the bottom of the box?  That little note was worth over $1,100!  YES, my 18 year old sister spent $1,100 on a BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR ME!

DSC_0370

The notecard taped to the box held another folded up sheet of paper.  As I opened the paper the tears began to flow …

DSC_0371

What did that sheet of paper contain?  What had Alex spent $1,100 on?  The one thing I will tell you is it was related to my car.  Before I reveal the gift, we need to travel back in time to explain the history behind the gift.  In May, I wrote about My First Car in a Writer’s Workshop prompt.  In the post I shared photos of my first and current car, plus the story behind all its DAMAGE AND DENTS!

Kelly backs up like she’s driving a bumper car vehicle! Very annoying!! Luckily, she only would give it "love taps" and not anything major. You can see some of the scratches on the front of my car. Oh and the “H” logo is pushed in on the hood! Thanks Kel!

When my youngest sister turned 16, she didn’t buy a car right away because my family had a plethora of cars and I was working across the street so most of the time I didn’t need a car. So I graciously allowed Alex to drive my car for about 6 months day and night. I’m a nice sister! It was during Alex’s tenure with my car that the major damage occurred. The biggest issue was when she got side swiped on the passenger side by a semi truck on the freeway. That left a MAJOR indent in the side of my car. It wasn’t her fault it happened, it just happened on her watch! She feels bad, and promises she will get it fixed. (Hopefully she doesn’t read this because she’ll be mortified and embarrassed! Oh well!)

Well, I’m sure now you’ve figured out what Alex got me for my birthday … SHE FIXED MY CAR!  She spent almost ALL the money she had earned this summer babysitting to get my car fixed.  How amazing is that??

DSC_0372DSC_0373

The funniest part … okay well there are three funny parts…

  1. I probably walked by my FIXED car 10 times and NEVER ONCE noticed it had been fixed.
  2. Just hours earlier I was slamming … and I mean SLAMMING, Alex for wrecking my car.  I went as far as saying, I probably wouldn’t keep it much longer!
  3. Kelly’s comment after I saw the car … “Alex- Sadly Cori was happy with the $20 Neti Pot!  There was no need to fix her car!”

Kelly should thank Alex, because Alex paid for the damage SHE caused to my car too!

ALEX THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!

Sadly, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repair her.  Okay really I’m sad because I no longer have something to hold over her head.  Darn her!

Here’s a few more photos from my family birthday party!

Youth Volunteer of the Year!

Last week my little sister (and recent high school graduate) was chosen as our city’s Youth Volunteer of the Year!  She was chosen from all of the teachers and staff at her high school.  Apparently our Mayor called the CHS principal and asked him to choose the Youth Volunteer of the Year.  The mayor gave the principal several days to make his decision, however it was less then 24 hours when the principal responded with Alex’s name!  He took the Youth Volunteer of the Year nomination to all the staff at the school and it was unanimously Alex they believed deserved the award.

What has Alex done to deserve this?  Well for starters for the past several years she has devoted her Friday afternoons and evenings to volunteer at our local hospital.  In the beginning she didn’t want the Friday shift, but when no one else was willing to fill it Alex stepped in and volunteered.  She gave up many Friday activities to go and help the patients and staff at the hospital.  Pretty cool, huh!

On top of volunteering at the hospital, she spends a couple hours each week volunteering at an animal safe haven, through callings at church and any other volunteer work that needs to be done.

I think my sister is a pretty special and amazingly given young woman!!  Way to go Alex!!

{Cabo} Day 8

The day we flew home (Monday) was the first and only trip to the beach we had over the 8 days we spent in Cabo!  Crazy isn’t it?!!  We used our time wisely and had a ton of fun at the beach!!

While most of us were out swimming, Kelly was making new friends….

One of my absolute favorite things to do at the beach is rent jet ski’s!  I’ve done it on every cruise I’ve been on and LOVE it!  Check out here (Cabo San Lucas on 2010 Cruise), here (Acapulco) and here (Huatulco, Mexico) to see past Jet-Skiing experiences!

Alex had never gone before and was scared!  I started out driving with her holding on and then midway we traded places (yes out in the middle of the water) so she could drive.  That helped, once she was in control she was all over it!  We had a blast!

On the way to the airport we detoured past the location where Mary & Bruce were married.  What a beautiful location, right on the water and overlooking the famous rocks!!

Well that ends our Cabo vacation Sad smile

Crazy Days of Summer *Yellow*

{Cabo} Day 6

This weeks Crazy Days of Summer prompt once again comes from sunny Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with the theme of yellow.  This prompt just coincidently fit with the activity I was most looking forward to on this vacation … PARASAILING.  Coincidentally out parasail was a big giant YELLOW happy face, perfect for this

The first group to go was my mom and sister Kelly.  While they were inflight Alex & I sat in the boat with the rest of our family who had chickened out, waiting for it to be our turn to fly!

DSC_0275DSC_0289DSC_0293DSC_0299

Upon return to the boat, our Aunt Sharon had chickened out on going, so we had paid for an extra flight.  Kelly, who doesn’t do well in boats at all, decided she’d go again, because it probably was safer for her IN THE AIR the ON THE BOAT!

DSC_0300DSC_0301DSC_0325DSC_0330

Kelly was fine until about 30 seconds after we left the boat, when she started to feel sick.  That immediately kicked me into nausea mode and we both were sick in the first minute.  Poor Alex was stuck between us and we both were NOT HAPPY.  She tried her hardest to get the boat’s attention, but we were to far away, her waving to them looked like she was waving “we’re having a blast!” and not “SOS!”  We finally got Alex to stop waving, because clearly that wasn’t working and eventually they lowered us back to the boat.

Instead of a nice calm boat landing, the people piloting the boat thought it would be funny to land us IN THE WATER.  That was the highlight for me.  I was at the point of trying to figure out where the best place to vomit was without the wind spraying it all over the three of us.  After our water landing, they started to send us back up – until we started screaming NOOOOO and my mom recognized the motion sickness face known all to well of Kelly & I

DSC_0340

My mom quickly told the guys to land us and let us get down.  I’ve never been so happy to be back on the boat in my life!

Was it scary?  No, for me it wasn’t.  I don’t have a fear of heights and the views were breathtaking!

So what made me sick?  Parasailing is just like riding the swings at the fair – similar motion.  I cannot ride the swings without getting nauseous and apparently I can’t parasail either!

Would I do it again?  Yes, after I’d taken a full dose of Dramamine, I would do it again!  I lived to tell about it and would highly recommend it to everyone to give it a try!!  I just suggest you take Dramamine before you fly Open-mouthed smile

{Cabo} Day 4

How is it Friday already???  Are vacation is coming to an end rapidly Sad smile The girls and I fly out Monday night, and the rest of the “adults” will be here another week.  I’m sad, but am getting excited to head home to see Mad & Emma!

So today (Thursday), we ventured downtown to the Marina where we came in on the cruise ship last year.  [Click HERE to see our day in Cabo from the cruise!]  Last year we only had about 5 hours to spend wandering around, so it was nice to see more of the town!  The last few days there have been cruise ships in and out, but today there wasn’t any in.

One of the unique parts of Cabo our family remembers was the baby tigers and the killer loving baby panther that they had on display for tourists to take photos of and hold.  Disclaimer: These animals were shunned by their parents (the parents prefer males) and this animal sanctuary is raising the animals until they are old enough to protect themselves in the wild (at about a year old).  We were ecstatic to see the sanctuary back again!  In the same area that the killer loving baby panther was last year, they had a African Lioness!

Aunt Sharon didn’t see the animals last year and she had to hold Amber, the African Lioness.  So Sharon paid for herself and Alex to hold the baby lion!

DSC_0014DSC_0017aDSC_0028aDSC_0042a

Here are some more “random” photos, taken throughout the day today!

DSC_0002DSC_0004DSC_0045aDSC_0052aGirls In PoolDSC_0062a

My mom, my sisters and I are all going parasailing tomorrow!!   Sue is chickening out and Sharon is still undecided, so we’ll see tomorrow who has the courage to actually do it!  I for one, cannot wait, that should be a lot of fun!
