Check out the fun my family is having!!

Pompeii

DSC_0672.jpg

This morning we got up early and boarded our tour bus for the ancient ruins of Pompeii.  1700 years ago (on my birthday, August 24th to be exact!) Mount Vesuvius erupted sending ash and pumice stones onto the city of Pompeii.  For three days homes were hit and people eventually suffocated to death.  Today, they have excavated a lot of the town and it was amazing to be walking through these ruins.

A couple of nights ago I put $10 into a slot machine in the casino and with one pull and .30c I won $45!  Once I had won I played two more rounds before I cashed out and was super excited to receive the $43.75 in cash!

Today is also the last night of the first cruise and there are a bunch of sad passengers.  I’m pretty ecstatic to be getting ready to start all over and begin a 10 day Eastern Mediterranean cruise!  Bring on 10 more days of five-star fun!

Palermo Rain

DSC_06081.jpg

It rained all day long today, icky drizzly Seattle rain.  We headed out with raincoats, hats and umbrellas as we ventured through the throngs of taxi driving, umbrella sellers.  Up and down the streets we walked only to find out that the majority of Palermo is closed on Mondays.  That didn’t slow us down to much, we still saw a lot of pretty buildings and even a haunted mansion before finding a quaint café where we ordered bruschetta, a cutting board of Italian cheese and meats, and then a big plate of French fries!  My dad wanted Pellegrino, but the look on the waiter’s face made it clear he didn’t know what he was asking for.  Kelly apparently knew that by asking for “aqua with gas” meant carbonated water!  (Oh and no Brandi didn’t lose a leg on the trip, even though the picture below makes it look that way!!)

When we got back to the ship Alex and I quickly got signed back in, but Brandi ran into some problems.  When they scanned her card nothing happened, they tried it twice before sending her over to a different security guard to solve the problem.  The guy who was helping her was super confused, he couldn’t figure out if Brandi was trying to get back on board or get off.  Apparently, when they signed her out it never registered so the entire time she was off the ship it still showed her as on.  It’s a good thing she didn’t get lost because the ship wouldn’t go looking for her for a very long time!!  The security guard kept asking her, “so you want to get off the ship?” Brandi finally convinced him she’d been off all morning and now wanted to go home!

Once we all finally got back on board we met up with Grandma for lunch by the pool.  At the time we had all just eaten, so we decided not to order, she ordered Mexican tortilla soup.  Once it came we all ooh’d and ahh’d over how good it looked and I ended up ordering one with a lemonade.  Kelly piped up and said she wanted a lemonade too, but when Benny brought the drinks, he brought me my lemonade and Kelly a bowl of soup!  We all laughed and laughed and Kelly modeled “drinking her lemonade”.

For dinner tonight we ate at the Italian restaurant, La Cachina.  All week I’ve been looking forward to this meal because I love Italian food, however my excitement was quickly squashed because it was the slowest.service.ever!  Alex got so bored that she cut up the plate of cheese Kelly had as an appetizer and created cheese flowers!

To make things even better I received my Caesar salad and saw a bug go scurrying across the lettuce.  Blech.  Even after I sent my buggy salad back the service continued to be slow, in an empty restaurant it took us nearly two hours to get our food.  Most of us didn’t even get dessert because we didn’t want to miss the big final production show at 7:30pm.  Kelly, however, managed to do both by bringing her dessert with her to the Stardust Theater!

Tomorrow we’re in Naples, Italy and will see Pompeii and then back to Rome on Wednesday which will conclude cruise #1 and on to cruise #2!!

Day At Sea

DSCN0979_thumb.jpg

Today was a nice laid back day since we were at sea and had no place to go or be.  My big plans included sleeping in and taking a nap, neither of which happened.

We started the day by participating in morning trivia where my team (Kelly, Alex, mom, dad, Brandi and Grandma) was horrible!  We got 6/20 questions right, but to our defense they were HARD QUESTIONS!  None of us our geniuses but we normally if we add all our brains together we aren’t horrible…today not so much!  To make things even more interesting the host had never hosted trivia before and apologized ahead of time for his accent which made the game even more exciting (and silly!) as we tried to decipher the question.  The entire audience, the host included, spent a majority of the game laughing as together we tried to understand the questions!

I then spent some time reading in the Haven.  My Grandma booked three suites on the 14th floor of the Norwegian Jade in their “Haven”.  In addition to our suites, we have access to a private swimming pool and hot tub, outside deck, food area and 24 hour concierge and butler.  It’s pretty sweet, pun intended!  I may never go back to my normal life!

Anyway, back to reading….I downloaded The Disneyland Story: The Unofficial Guide to the Evolution of Walt Disney’s Dream by Sam Gennawey before leaving and have been enamored by the book ever since.  This book is an actual biography of Disneyland and began with Walt Disney’s earliest ideas of what Disneyland could be until present times.  It’s been really interesting reading about the history, ideas and how some of the most famous rides came to be.  I’m now about 3/4 of the way through the book and am already having withdrawals about finishing it.  I’m such a dork, I’m already considering re-reading it right away.

Brandi and I participated in a scavenger hunt and was able to find 18/20 items on the list.  We couldn’t find two socks with holes in them or a beach ball.  After that we played several games of cards and then got ready for dinner.

I forgot one item at home and it’s a big one…my camera charger…when I made this realization I had a panic attack.  I was only a couple of days through the trip and the thought of my camera not working for the remainder of a trip of a lifetime wasn’t fun.  Luckily the photo gallery has a universal battery charges and is able to charge my battery.  Panic attack averted.  However, the downside was I didn’t take any photos today because they had my battery…well that and there was really nothing to photograph.  We did take a couple of photos tonight at dinner, but not many.

Tomorrow we’re in Cagliari, Italy (???).  We have no tour so we’re on our own, wish us luck!

Hot Air Balloons

wpid-Photo-Mar-5-2015-839-PM.jpg

The rest of the country may be undergoing a horrific winter, but in Seattle spring is here! We've been having record breaking warm temperatures and spending a lot of time outside enjoying the sunshine. So last weekend when I visited the girls we wanted to be outside.

I hadn't been to their school since Emmalee started Kindergarten and they couldn't wait to show off their playground and new tricks they'd learned so off we went to their elementary school to play.

While we were there we noticed a hot air balloon floating towards us. We didn't think anything of it and kept playing, however as we were getting ready to go we realized it was looking like it was going to land in the field behind the school.

Emmalee immediately took off across the playground and toward the balloon, with the rest of us right behind her. We weren't going to witness the first balloon landing of the year (for us!).

(Ignore the graininess of my photos, I took them on my phone as I was chasing after Emma and not really paying attention!)

As we watched the hot air balloon float closer and closer to the ground I reminisced about watching hot air balloons land all summer long when I was growing up.

The neighborhood where I grew up was one block from a park that was frequently the landing point for hot air balloons. I remember the excitement of spotting a hot air balloon as it began its descent down to earth.

Just like Emmalee, I would scream hot air balloon landing and take off out the front door, up the street and down the road toward the park with my parents chasing after me hoping I'd reach the park before it landed.

I always loved watching hot air balloons land and was excited to share the experience with Maddie and Emma!

While I love watching hot air balloons land I'm not sure I would ever want to go up in one! Would you ever ride in a hot air balloon? Or maybe you have, was it worth it? Was it scary?

Regardless I'm ready for sprung and summer to officially be here spring so we can see more hot air balloons!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Oh wait, what’s that date say?  February 16th?!  Hmmm….guess I’m slightly late! The good news is it Week 51 of my 365 day photo challenge from 2014!  It may be mid-February, but I’m still plowing away at getting the photos blogged, but I did complete the challenge!  I *hope* to get my final week of photos up this week and then my rewind post shortly there after!

February 16th also has an important day in my house and this year even more!  Today is my parents 30th Wedding Anniversary!  Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!

In the meantime, back to Christmastime!

#CatchTheMoment365; Week 49

post-day343-dec9_thumb.png

Whoa, look that’s two posts in two days.  Something must be terribly wrong with me!  No, more like tomorrow is December 31st and I’m three weeks behind on posting my Catch the Moment photos to the blog.  I had hope to get all caught up, but it just never happened.  The good news is the last three weeks won’t be far behind!

Week 49 contained a lot of Christmas from movies, looking at Christmas lights, putting up the tree and helping at a holiday gift program that allowed parents in need to pick out new gifts for the kids.  It was truly a magical week!

Oh, and make sure you stop by tomorrow to see my 2014 in Review post!  Yes, that will make it three days in a row, maybe even one on January 1st!  Look out!

#CatchTheMoment365; Week 44

post-day306-nov2.png

This past Friday was the Eastside Baby Corner Helping Kids Thrive Luncheon and what an amazing event it was!  We have an amazingly generous community who gave from their heart to help EBC be able to provide for kids in need.  I can’t wait to share more information on how we did, but in the meantime just know we are VERY excited with the outcome!

Week 44 brought us into November.

NOVEMBER!!

Can you believe that?  Not only are we in November, but it’s already midway through the month with Thanksgiving next week.  Crazy!

Here’s what week 44 looked like:
