Vatican City & Embarkation

Today was a total whirlwind, that started about 6am.  I figured I’d be super jetlagged since we’re eight hours ahead here, but since I didn’t sleep the previous 24-ish hours, I was able to fall asleep around 8:30pm and slept HARD until about 6am which was good because we had to have eaten breakfast, be packed and in the hotel lobby by 8:30am when we were picked up for a tour of Vatican City.

On the way to The Vatican we drove past the Colosseum.  I wish we had had time to visit it, but it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to, so for now I’ll just be happy with the photos!  (The cruise ship port is a tour hour drive from Rome, so when we come back in a 10 days it’s a little to far to visit and then when we return at the end of our cruise it’s straight to the airport.)

Vatican City {The Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica}

WOW, what a beautiful place!  We were lucky enough to have hired a private tour guide who got us right in and took us on an amazing tour of The Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica.  It was amazing to be walking through (and on!) history.  Every single corridor, piazza and room was beautifully adorned with one of a kind, breathtaking paintings, tapestries, sculptures and mosaics.  It didn’t seem possible for the next location we toured to be even more beautiful.  I’m still pinching myself in amazement that I had the privilege of touring such a historical place.

Embarkation {Civitavecchia, Italy}

After our tour, we got back on our bus and headed out to the coast where the Norwegian Jade was waiting.  The crazy part is for some reason I didn’t take many photos of our embarkation, in fact the photos I took are down right awful.  I was way to present in the moment to even think about snapping a photo!  Nonetheless, here are a couple of photos of us boarding the vessel.

Tomorrow we’ll be in Livorno, Italy where we’ll take a trolley ride to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa….O.M.G!!  The only downside is we lose another hour and there will be a nine hour difference between us and Seattle.

Okay, off to bed I go.  I’m loving the gentle rocking of the boat and it’s putting me to sleep!

    Were you amazed at the massive size of everything in Vatican City? There was a great book about it (Pillars of the earth – I think that’s the title )

      Nope, we just did the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and the Basilica; I cheated on my title and said Vatican City!
