Saying Goodbye

karlaBy the time this post goes live, I had hoped I’d be in Idaho attending my great-aunt’s funeral.  Instead, I’m sitting at home thanks to way to expensive airfare and not wanting to drive the 14 hours in the snow.  My mom flew in from Hawaii where she was vacationing and Alex will be driving from Rexburg.  So there will be Benson’s in attendance.  Just wish I could be there too.  Oh well, I’ll attend the funeral and family celebration in spirit.

My Aunt Karla passed away suddenly after a tragic snowmobiling accident on her farm on Sunday.

I cannot believe she is gone.

She was the glue of my mom’s family.

She is my mom’s hero and “second mom”.  When my mom had a major accident at 14 years old, it was Aunt Karla who stayed by my mom’s side, sleeping on the floor of the hospital room, begging doctors for pain medication, doing anything and everything she could to help my mom.  (At the time of the accident, their was a massive airline strike, and my Grandma was unable to fly into Salt Lake City for sometime.)

In the past couple of years, I had the opportunity to visit her on two different occasions.  In May 2011, we visited the farm and I shared fun photos of {INSIDE} and {OUTSIDE} of her beautiful home.  And then this past summer, we celebrated my Grandma’s 80th birthday by renting a tour bus for our whole family and touring around my Grandma’s old haunts.  One of the stops was visiting Aunt Karla and Uncle Tom on the family farm.

I never got posts up from Grandma’s birthday celebration weekend, but now wish I had.  Maybe it’s not to late and I can get the pictures up now…Anyway…

Aunt Karla is quite the historian and proud of her hometown, as she should.  She was RAISED, RAISED HER FAMILY, RETIRED and PASSED AWAY at the home where she was BORN!  How amazing is that?  in 2010, she wrote, compiled and published a 309 page biography highlighting and sharing the history behind the Community of Banida, Idaho for their centennial celebration!

Other amazing facts about Aunt Karla:

  • Had a 25 year teaching career, which also included many awards including Idaho Teacher of the Year!
  • Active in church having served in many stake and ward callings
  • Served several church missions with Uncle Tom including, Turkey, Atlanta, Temple Square and Palmyra New York
  • Was married to Uncle Tom for 55 years, had 7 children, 24 grand-children and 2 great-grandchildren.

What an amazing woman and life she lived.

In honor of Aunt Karla, my mom was moved to write a poem that they are sharing this weekend with the family on behalf of her and her sisters.  She asked me to add photos to it and spruce it up a bit.  Here’s the beautiful poem and some photos spotlighting our family’s visit to the farm this past August.

Aunt Karla, Until we meet again…XOXO.

So sorry for your loss, but it sounds like she left great memories with here family members. A life is not measured by how long it is, but how it impacts everyone around them. Cherish those good memories you hold of her.
