Great Wolf Lodge … what a slip, I mean trip!

This past weekend I tagged along with my Aunt Sue (Granny) and Brandi in taking the girls to Great Wolf Lodge, while Jaime and Zak are enjoying some R&R on a weeklong Caribbean Cruise.  Can you say jealous?!

Great Wolf Lodge didn’t completely remove the jealousy, but it helped!

We arrived around noon on Saturday and amazingly was able to check right in, drop off DSC_0798
our bags in our room and head right to the waterpark.

This was our second trip to Great Wolf Lodge, during my blogging strike we went (over my birthday none-the-less), but I never got pictures up.  With it being our second trip the girls (and us) had a better idea of what to expect.

Great Wolf Lodge prides itself on having an 84* indoor waterpark, but let me tell GWL WaterFallyou when you first get in the water 84* is FREEZING!  The girls adjusted immediately, it took a little bit more time for Granny, Brandi & I too, but before we knew it we were able bobbing along in the “snake pool” and “wave pool”.

At our last visit Madison mastered the red and yellow slides.  Emmalee wanted to try so bad, but got stuck next in line, right as the the great big bucket dumped 1,000 gallons of water right on her.  At that point she was done!

This time however, Brandi came up with this plan to trick Emmalee into going down.  She told Em that by pushing the magic button (the wolf’s nose on the sign for the slides), the bucket couldn’t drop while we were in line.

We timed it, that Em pushed the “button” right after it dumped assuming we could get down the slide before it went again.  I knew that if she went down once she’d be hooked!  So we pushed the button and hurried into line.  However, the line was longer than expected …

There is a bell that starts dinging to give visitors warning of the pending dump.  I started to get nervous as I heard the bell go off.  Hoping that we would have just enough time for me to get Emmalee down the slide before it dumped.  However, that didn’t happen and as it began to dump.  I hovered over the top of Emma and told her to look at her toes while the bucket dumped.

When it was over, to my amazement she goes “was that the big bucket??  It didn’t scare me!” and down the waterslide she went.

Again. and Again. and Again.

She was no longer scared of the bucket or the big waterslides!

Christmastime is a great time to visit, they have all their Christmas decorations up and it even snows in the lobby!  The girls thought the snow as absolutely amazing and they loved it.  There was a show that went along with the snow, and that was less then enjoyable (IMHO!).  But, beyond worth watching to see the girls faces light up as snow fluttered to the ground.

That night after the show we went back to our room where we watched Granny trip and fall hurting her toe.  We were all laughing so hard, but I apparently shouldn’t have, because as they say karma is a …. well you know!  Don’t worry Granny was fine, just has a nice hole in her pants and a bruised toe.

The next day, we played in the waterpark again and this time Granny and I escaped to ride some of the bigger waterslides.  After going down the last time, we headed back to find Brandi and the girls who were playing in the kids area.

I began walking down the stairs and I’m not sure what happened after that.  But suddenly I found myself on the ground falling down 6 concrete steps, hitting my head, back and neck on every step as I went.  Ouch.

My aunt was off to be my beacon of hope, by going to find help but after 5 minutes she was gone.  So much for her helping me out!!  I finally got the attention of a lifeguard to inform him I’d fallen down the stairs and finally got some medical attention.

After a brief discussion and lots of paperwork filled out it was decided that I’d take it slow for an hour and just watch.  After the hour, I’d decide if I needed to go to the emergency room or not.  At that point I hurt, but not to bad.  So it sounded like a good plan to me.

Once I was allowed to get up and move from where I had fallen, I walked across the waterpark to the wave pool when suddenly Brandi tells me “Cori you have a hole in your bathing suit bottom”.

I didn’t think much of it and kept walking, still slightly out of it and Brandi was insistent on finding my shorts and getting them on me.  I finally gave in and let her help me put on shorts.

After the hour had passed it was decided that we would just go home and I’d rest.  So we got up and went to the dressing room to change.  It was at that moment that I realized the whole Brandi was talking about was across my bottom and HUGE.

Basically I mooned all of Great Wolf Lodge.

I was thankful I was so incoherent when it happened, because trust me I was beyond embarrassed when I realized how bad it was!

Like I said earlier Karma is a …. witch.  I shouldn’t have laughed at my aunt the night before!  Oh well, we now have a funny story to share!

It’s now been two days since my fall and I’m pretty banged up.  I went into the doctor yesterday to be checked out and the doctor reassured me I was fine and very very lucky I hadn’t hurt myself more.  I’m extremely swollen in my shoulders and tailbone, but no bruising…yet.  Sounds like it’s only a matter of time.  Pretty much every part of my body aches and hurts…not fun!

I’m now on pain medicine, muscle relaxant and an anti-inflammatory every 6 hours.  I feel okay while on the medicine, but as it starts to wear off, I begin to hurt again.  My doctor warned me there’s a chance I could hurt for a couple weeks.  Awesome.

I worked from home yesterday and today, but have to go back in the morning so that will be my first real test of entry back into the real world.  Hopefully I can make it through a full day.  Wish me luck.

Time for more medicine and bed….I’m exhausted!

Happy December everyone!

Cori, I’m so sorry to hear that your fall was worse than I first understood. Thank you for helping the girls have an awesome weekend. They are so precious. Please be very careful with your back, it can come back to give you a lot of pain as you get older. Thanks for being my #2 grandchild in Washington. Have a wonderful Christmas, if I don’t talk to you before then. Kitty

Oh, I’m so sorry you fell! That’s the worst. I fell down our home stairs a couple of weeks ago and I’m still sore. I hope you’re feeling better very soon!

Great Wolf Lodge is fun for the whole family!! I really recommend going with at least 3 adults/older kids when you have little ones. That way you can have 2 of you go ride the bigger slides, while the 3rd stays with the kids … and then swap! That way it’s more fun for everyone!!

Wow, it sounds like that fall could have caused some major injuries. You were very lucky and I hope you feel better soon. At least you ended up with a bit of a laugh due to the hole. :)

Glad the rest of the trip went well. We have not been to Great Wolf yet but it’s on our one day list.

Im so happy to hear that you survived the fall, best wishes as you heal!

In your opinion, what is the ideal age for the Great Wolf Lodge Water park?

Best age to go … Hmmm that really depends!

For 2-4 year olds they have an awesome kids area equipt with little slides, spraying toys and climbers!!

I would say 5+ for the bigger slides and about 7 for the biggest 2 slides.

I went with a almost 4yo and almost 7yo and try had a ton of fun!
